Pop Media Teaming With China’s Artention for ‘Knockout Girls’ Movie

Stu Levy’s Pop Media Holdings is teaming with China’s Artention Films to produce the martial arts comedy “Knockout Girls,” Variety has learned exclusively.

Pop Media has tapped veteran director Arthur Anderson to helm “Knockout Girls,” based on a Tokyopop concept written by screenwriter Olivia Briggs. Michael Doven of United Pictures Group is exec producing.

The story surrounds obsessed martial arts fighter who travels to America in search of a spot on the Global Fighting Championship team. Her only way in is to whip a rag-tag club of fighters at a college into shape, while learning the meaning of friendship from the club’s disgraced former leader.

Pop Media, the parent of manga specialist Tokyopop, is also producing an upcoming comic book for “Knockout Girls” in parallel with the film. Filming is set to begin this fall in Canada and China.

The project is Levy’s second China-Hollywood movie co-production announced after “Juror 13,” based on the sci-fi graphic novel.

Anderson’s credits as an assistant director include “Mission: Impossible II,” “Mission: Impossible III,”  “Paycheck,” “Face/Off” and “Pretty Little Liars.”

Arthur Anderson is represented by APA and Stone Genow Smelkinson Binder & Christopher.  Levy and Pop Media Holdings are represented by Steve Saltzman at Loeb & Loeb.
